Corriveau Calls on Senate to Pass Plan to Create 29,000 Jobs

Schoolcraft project will create 240 local jobs, boost local economy

LANSING – The Michigan House of Representatives today approved a plan that will create more than 29,000 jobs for Michigan workers after strengthening a weaker version that was approved by the Senate. State Representative Marc Corriveau (D-Northville) approved the economic stimulus plan that will pump more than $1.8 billion into Michigan's economy; it now goes back to the Senate for approval.

"This plan will get thousands of workers back on the job right here in Wayne County and all across the state," Corriveau said. "Times are tough, with working families struggling to make ends meet as the cost of everything from a gallon of gas to a gallon of milk skyrockets. Creating jobs now is my top priority, and I hope my colleagues in the Senate will work together with the House to put this plan into action now."

The stimulus plan will speed up funding for hundreds of construction projects around the state at universities, colleges, airports, military facilities and state parks. In addition to creating jobs now for Michigan's workers, the plan also will create new jobs in emerging fields by equipping our colleges and universities with the facilities they need to train students for high-tech jobs in homeland security, life sciences and other cutting-edge fields.

Under the plan, a new $15 million Public Safety/Homeland Security Classroom Building will be built at Schoolcraft College using a mix of state, federal and local funding – creating 240 local jobs. The project is one of hundreds of construction projects at universities, colleges, airports, military facilities and state parks across the state that will help create more than 29,000 jobs for Michigan's workers. It is part of a plan to pump $1.8 billion into the economy and help move Michigan forward.

"The Legislature must have one focused goal – creating more good-paying jobs for our workers," Corriveau said. "This plan is custom-made to do just that. Every job that we create makes a difference to our working families and helps to move Michigan forward. The time to act is now."
